What Are Shower Melts
Shower melts, and bath bombs are quite similar when it comes to their ingredients. Both contain a mixture of baking soda, essential oils, and optionally, a weak acid. The type of essential oil used depends on what you want to treat.
Lavender oil is great for anxiety relief, rosemary oil relieves muscle aches and pains, and lemon oil can brighten a dull complexion. As far as relieving congestion from a viral infection goes, the preferred oils are peppermint oil, chamomile oil, and eucalyptus oil.
How To Make Shower Melts
To make your shower melts to soothe your symptoms, all you need is a silicon mold (muffin liners or ice cube trays are great options), some baking soda, one or more essential oils, and optionally some cornstarch, citric acid, natural food dye, and herbs.
You are supposed to mix these ingredients together until you get a thick paste and press this paste into your silicon mold. Silicon molds are used in making shower melts because they’ll be easier to pop out once set.

Once your shower melt is ready for use, just place it on the bottom of your shower and let the water dissolve the ingredients. You’ll notice the melt bumbling up and fizzing and the scent from the essential oils filling your shower.
To relieve congestion, we suggest using peppermint essential oil, chamomile essential oil, and eucalyptus essential oil. All three oils are known for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and decongestant properties. In fact, studies on these oils have found ample evidence that they help relieve symptoms of the common cold, most notably congestion.

3 Homemade Shower Melt Recipes

1. Shower Melts by Hello Glow
Although these shower melts were designed with stress relief in mind, the recipe calls for chamomile leaves, peppermint oil, and eucalyptus essential oil which means they double as a common cold treatment. To make this decorative shower melts, you will need:
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds
- 2 tablespoon dried chamomile leaves or chamomile tea
- ½ cup water
- Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils (we suggest skipping the other oils listed as they can irritate your airways)
- Ground the lavender and chamomile in a mortar and mix with baking soda.
- Add enough water to make a thick paste.
- Bake the molds at 350°F for up to 20 minutes.
- Let the tablets cool and once cooled, sprinkle with the essential oils.
- Transfer the melts into a jar and store in cool and dry place until ready for use.
2. Homemade Shower Soothers
This recipe by Mrs. Happy Homemaker is perfect for when you need an easy congestion relief. This version also makes for compact shower melts that last longer in the shower and give a punch of aromatherapy to beat that common cold.
- 1 cup of baking soda
- ⅓ cup + 2 tablespoons water
- several drops of rosemary essential oil, lavender essential oil, eucalyptus essential oil, peppermint essential oil
- Combine the baking soda and water and fill in a silicone liner half way through.
- Add a few drops of the essential oils and fill the rest of the silicone mold.
- Bake mixture for 20 minutes at 350°F. Once done, let cool and add a few more drops of essential oils and let absorb.
- Optionally, you can add the extra drops to the melts just before you take a shower.
3. Rosemary Shower Melts
These shower melts are bound to relieve your aches and pains thanks to the rosemary, but also add peppermint oil to the mixture for congestion relief. They’re also quite decorative.
- 1 cup corn starch
- 2 teaspoons of water
- 1 cup baking soda
- 5-7 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil, plus a decongestion oil such as peppermint.
- Natural Green food dye
- Mix all ingredients together until you get a thick paste and press the mixture into silicone molds.
- Place the mixture into the freezer until set and later, transfer into an airtight container.
