We all love walking down the street and hearing the distant sounds of a musician performing on a corner somewhere. It adds an appealing air to the atmosphere and can make a simple outing more enjoyable, even nostalgic. My favorite is when I’m walking through the city during a winter evening and hear the unique sound of bagpipes playing somewhere in the distance.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of incredibly talented musicians that perform on those distant street corners that otherwise go unnoticed or get ignored, regardless of how much work and passion they are channeling through their beautiful music.
This was the case for this particular Malaysian performer, at least until he attracted an audience – though not the audience he expected.
A Darling – And Unexpected – Audience
This talented performer had been playing his heart out for most of the night and most people barely gave him a second glance, until a small group of four 3-month-old kittens gathered around him and became instantly entranced with his performance. (1)
The sight of these kittens surrounding the performer and brightening up his night was darling and incredibly uplifting.
Check it out for yourself:
Adorable, right? Have you ever seen such a sight? Whenever I play my instruments, my dogs will rub their ears as if in distaste, so I’d consider it quite a high compliment if any animals (cats or dogs) were in love with the music I was playing like those darling kittens!
This sweet happenstance just goes to show how some of the simplest things in life can brighten up even the most dismal of times. Especially for street musicians, a lot of them are putting themselves out there because they not only enjoy the music they create, but believe that it deserves to be heard and they become willing to make themselves heard however they can, even if that means playing for hours on end on random street corners. It’s definitely not an easy thing to do, especially if your financial stability is on the line. Their bold efforts are truly admirable, if you ask me.
If you happen to be street musician or are aspiring to be one, here are a couple of basic tips that could help you up your street performing game (and maybe even attract a kitten audience sometime!): (2)
- Select Your Instrument Wisely – make sure you choose an instrument that can definitely be heard, no matter how loud your chosen setting may be.
- Dress The Part – find a look that not only helps express who you are as a performer, but is also comfortable enough to wear for several hours and is suited for the outdoor environment (for example, if it’s cold, make sure you dress warm).
- Make Money Collection Super Easy – if you’re hoping to make some money with your performances, make sure your method for collecting money is clear and easy for people. The easier it is, the more likely people will be to drop some cash.
- Strategically Select Your Locations – location can really make a difference for the success of your performance and the audience that hears you. Find places that won’t drown you out, have high amounts of public traffic, has enough space for you to perform, and isn’t already occupied by other performers.
Good luck out there, musicians! Also, if any of you have any other adorable stories like the one above, please share, we’d love to spread some more smiles!
