The Unbelievable Benefits Of Onions + A Shocking Detoxifying Trick

Onions are definitely nothing to cry over. In fact, this wonderful vegetable has layers and layers (pun intended) of health benefits just waiting to be exposed!

Onions are a nutrient dense food, meaning that, although they are very low in calories (think guilt-free eating that’s full of flavor), they are also high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

One cup of chopped onion contains (approximately):

  • 64 calories
  • 15 grams of carbohydrates
  • 0 grams of fat
  • 0 grams of cholesterols
  • 3 grams of fiber
  • 2 grams of protein
  • 10% or more of the daily value for vitamin C, vitamin B6 and manganese
  • Onions also contain small amounts of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium and the antioxidants quercetin and sulfur

Onions are part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs, which also includes garlic, leeks, scallions and chives. Allium vegetables have been grown and used for thousands of years, not only for their distinctive and wonderful flavor, but also for their potent medicinal properties.

It turns out that this pungent vegetable is also amazing for your heart. Quercetin, a naturally derived PDE4-selective inhibitor found in fruits, vegetables and tea and is a compound that is highly concentrated in onions, can also help prevent plaque buildup in the arteries. Reducing this plaque buildup helps to prevent against heart attack and stroke, so keeping onions in your diet is a heart-healthy must!

Anti-Inflammatory Benefits

Suffering from inflammation? Onions can help! The same quercetin in onions that is great for heart health was also found in a study in the American Journal of Physiology, Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology to relax the airway muscles and provide asthma relief. The sulfurs in onions were also found to be an efficient anti-inflammatory agent, according to a study published in the journal International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology.

Immune System Benefits

Eliminating free radicals from the body can potentially have life-saving benefits. Free radicals can cause damage to the body if antioxidants are unavailable to inhibit and destroy them. Luckily for onion lovers, the quercetin in the onions can help to break up the mucus in your head and chest while boosting your immune system. Onions also contain allicin (also found in garlic), which slows down and kills a variety of viruses and bacteria.

Detoxifying Benefits

Placing an onion on your feet when you have a cold can actually be a great way of helping you to recover faster. The practice has been widely used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Your feet contain thousands of nerve endings that act as access point to the internal organs and your nervous system.

The phosphoric acid in the onion enters the bloodstream and helps to purify the blood and pull out toxins (this is why you should never leave a cut onion in your fridge – it will pull the toxins from your fridge and then you eat the onion later…yuck!). This helps you become healthier and better equipped to fight off inflammation and whatever virus is currently ailing you.

Here’s how to use onions to help detoxify your blood:

  • Take an onion (any color) and cut into flat slices.
  • Place the onions at the bottom of your feet and pull a thick pair of socks over the onions to keep them in place overnight.
  • Go to sleep and in the morning discard the onions.

Using onions can be a safe, inexpensive, easy and delicious way to improve your life! Let us know in the comments below if you’ve tried the onion sock trick and what you thought of it’s detoxifying abilities!
