Healthy Holistic Living

Alternative techniques have always been apart of my life. So it was nothing new to consider trying acupuncture. The only thing that was new was my response.

– Acupuncture: is an ancient technique in which a skilled practitioner inserts hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to prevent or treat illness. Practiced for over 2,500 years in China, where it originated, acupuncture is part of the holistic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which views health as a constantly changing flow of energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”).

– Naturopathy: is a distinct system of medicine that is based on a belief in the healing power of nature and especially in the body’s innate ability to fight disease and heal itself. It is a system of therapy that relies on natural remedies, such as sunlight supplemented with diet and massage to treat illness.

My Experience: After seeing my general practitioner and getting the basic medical testing done I felt it was important for me to also seek advice from a doctor who could help me support my body in healing itself, a Naturopath. I had already been using this particular doctor for sometime for my general healthcare and felt it was important to also include her in my health assessment. One of the alternative methods that she included in her evaluation and health strategy was Acupuncture.

The Naturopath preformed a complete evaluation that looked at the whole me. She asked every question in the book from how my current relationship was going to the last time I got my teeth cleaned.

My case was not an easy one to diagnose so her first approach was to prescribe the nutrients that I needed to support my body in the healing process and to give me herbal remedies to deal with any immediate symptoms. Pain was one of the initial concerns.

The second approach she took was to start Acupuncture. Now, I have had this technique in the past and feel it has wonderful benefits BUT, when you have an undiagnosed neurological disorder which of course we didn’t know at the time, it can have pretty severe ramifications. It caused electrical shock like feelings on the left side of my body and pain. Sometimes you can have a good treatment at the wrong time or for the wrong disorder.

Would I do it again? Unequivocally, yes. I truly believe that our bodies have the ability to heal themselves given the optimum environment and support. I also feel strongly that acupuncture can be very valuable under the right circumstances. Additionally, the experience helped me to realize that there was a deeper underlying neurological problem in my body that I had to deal with.
