Women have been told that they have to suffer for beauty. This is a lie, yet many women follow it, often unknowingly.

According to an industry report, the average women absorb 4 lbs 6 oz of chemicals of make-up and toiletries each year. Bionsen, a natural deodorant company has found that just during routine grooming the average woman exposes herself to 515 different synthetic chemicals. Furthermore, the Nonprofit Environmental Working Group has found that the average American woman applies about 168 chemicals on her face and body daily.

If you think about all the lotions, cleaners, tonics, make-up so on most women use, this is not surprising, but certainly concerning. These chemicals get absorbed in your skin and can lead to inflammation and disease, including cancer.

94 of women and 69 percent of men in the US apply carcinogens on their body unknowingly. Some of these include hydroquinone, ethylene dioxide, 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, nitrosamines, PAHs, and acrylamide. They also use hormone-disturbing phthalates and well-known toxins, such as parabens that mimic the effects of estrogen and can lead to tumors. Raising awareness regarding this issue is warranted.

To truly protect yourself from harmful chemicals, the best thing you can do is to buy organic and natural products, or make your own. When looking for organic and natural skin care, you can find cruelty-free and vegan options as well to do good not only for your health but the world as well.

Lastly, remember, you don’t have to always have your face on. You are beautiful without makeup. While it can be fun to express yourself with makeup, let your skin breathe and your natural beauty shine. Love yourself and get confident in your skin.
