DIY Antiseptic Turmeric Cream Recipe (Helps Heal Cuts and Scrapes)

Antiseptic (Turmeric) Cream

There are many useful medicines to have around the house and antiseptic cream is one of them, given the fact that it can be used for a wide range of purposes. Antiseptic creams contain substances with disinfecting properties, which makes it ideal for small cuts and grazes, open wounds and minor skin conditions, such as scabies. Apart from the store-bought versions, it is possible to prepare the antiseptic cream in the comfort of your home, using natural ingredients with disinfecting properties, such as turmeric. Keep on reading and discover more information on this rather interesting subject.

Common Antiseptic Creams: Essential Information

It is enough to visit one single drug store, and you will be offered with some common antiseptic creams, which share the same purpose and that is to keep the skin clean and free of potentially infectious microorganisms. One of the most often recommended antiseptic creams is Bepanthen, which is well-known for its ability to treat both cuts and minor wounds. Other popular antiseptic creams include Betadine, Dettol, Comvita, Hygex and Medicreme. Many of these creams are also recommended for pimples, so you do not have to ask yourself how to get rid of acne.

Antiseptic creams, given their active ingredients, are highly efficient in ensuring the proper protection of the skin. However, when it comes to the store-bought versions, it should be mentioned that not all of the ingredients contained in these creams are beneficial for the skin. For example, petroleum is often added to antiseptic creams, which is not the kind of ingredient you would want to apply on an open wound (even if it is just a minor scrape or graze). On the other hand, by choosing antiseptic creams with natural ingredients or by preparing such solutions at home, you won’t have to worry about such risks, while benefitting to the fullest from the antiseptic power of the chosen ingredients.

The Antiseptic Properties of Turmeric Cream

Ever since the ancient times, turmeric has been used for its wide range of beneficial properties. Today, in modern times, when you type health benefits turmeric in a search engine, it is practically impossible not to be amazed at how healthy this rather simple spice is. Moreover, the antiseptic properties of turmeric have been confirmed through some studies, as you will have the opportunity to discover below.

According to a study published in 2015, in the Journal of Food Science and Technology, turmeric is a spice which presents a highly efficient antimicrobial activity. The authors of the study researched the antimicrobial power of turmeric extract, against infectious microorganisms, such as E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. While this study was made for the food industry, it is a good indication that turmeric can be used as a topical application, with highly efficient antiseptic properties. It can even be used for cosmetic applications, with turmeric facial masks helping both men and women escape a dull complexion.

In another study, published in 2014, in the Journal of HerbMed Pharmacology, turmeric was presented as a spice with “multifunctional medicinal properties.” Turmeric has been identified as presenting both antifungal and antimicrobial properties, being able to inhibit the growth of pathological microorganisms. The study demonstrated that topical applications with turmeric are highly efficient against fungal microorganisms as well. The antiseptic properties of turmeric have been identified through many other studies, including one that analyzed the antimicrobial activity of medicinal herbs and one that presented turmeric as the “golden spice,” with so many beneficial properties to offer.

DIY Antiseptic Turmeric Cream

If you have decided to prepare the antiseptic turmeric cream in the comfort of your home, you should follow a recipe that works. The recipe that you will find below is recommended for scabies, a parasitic condition affecting the skin but you can use the resulting cream for other purposes as well (these will be presented in a subsequent paragraph). In the meantime, let us see how you can make your turmeric antiseptic cream, using, of course, the golden spice and a few additional, yet highly beneficial, ingredients. As a mention, it will not take more than a couple of minutes to prepare the cream, so do not worry about not having enough time.

These are the ingredients that you will require for the antiseptic turmeric cream:

  • ground turmeric (1 oz.)
  • neem oil (2 oz.)
  • coconut oil (1 oz.)
  • freshly-squeezed lemon juice (1 oz.)
  • tea tree oil (10 drops).

Directions:

  1. Once you have gathered all of the ingredients mentioned here, you can move on to preparation.
  2. Take a bowl and mix all of the ingredients, until you obtain an even consistency.
  3. You can then pour the resulting mixture into a container and use it as needed, on the affected part of the skin.
  4. You can maintain the application for about twenty minutes, then rinse it off (you can also leave it longer on the skin).
  5. In general, it is recommended to use the cream two or three times per day, depending on the condition.
  6. One thing to keep in mind is that turmeric may stain the clothes you are wearing, so pay attention to such matters.

Antiseptic Turmeric Cream: Indications and Contraindications

As it was mentioned at the beginning of the article, the antiseptic turmeric cream can be used for a wide range of minor problems, this being the reason why you should always have it made. The natural solution is recommended for cuts and grazes, but it should be pointed out that it does have limitations; if the cut is deep or the graze is extensive, you might need to visit a doctor. The cream can also promote the healing of the skin in case of small wounds, but once again, only for such kind of wounds and not larger ones. Last, but not least, you can use the antiseptic turmeric cream to disinfect the skin generally or as a topical treatment for parasitic conditions, such as scabies.

From what has been said above, you probably understand the situations in which the antiseptic turmeric cream is not recommended. These situations include serious skin issues, with extensive wounds. Sometimes, the wound or cut might already be infected, which is a situation that requires antibiotics and not just antiseptics. For this reason, it is advisable to see a doctor first and inquire about the possibility of using such topical treatments for your condition. The doctor can determine whether the antiseptic turmeric cream is enough for your skin issue or if additional treatment is required. Moreover, he/she can monitor the healing process and ensure that everything is alright.

Final Word

Turmeric is an amazing spice, which can be used to add flavors to a wide range of meals. At the same time, it has powerful antiseptic properties, confirmed through various studies and researches. It is recommended for topical applications, promoting the healing process at the level of the skin, in the case of cuts, grazes, minor wounds and minor skin conditions, such as scabies. As you have seen for yourself, it is not difficult to prepare the antiseptic turmeric cream in the comfort of your home, not to mention you know for certain that such a solution is 100% effective (no additional risks present).
