7 foods that reduce your risk of cavities and plaque every time you eat them
You can find superfoods anywhere – they’re among the healthiest of foods because they contain so many of the nutrients that our bodies simply cannot produce on their own. Especially when it comes to the teeth, superfoods come in handy because of how they keep our dental health in check from morning until night.
Now, I’m not saying that there are any magic foods that will instantly fight against gum disease or tooth decay in the short term. Rather, there are some foods out there that contain the right properties to promote better dental health in the long run.
7 Superfoods That Improve Your Dental Health
1. Raw Milk
Teeth need calcium to remain strong and healthy. At the same time, there are so many problems out there associated with dairy products that it would probably be better to stick with a healthier alternative. I tend to go with almond milk whenever I can, how about you?
Almond milk contains roughly the same concentration of calcium as regular milk – the best part is, there aren’t hundreds of adverse conditions associated with it. The vitamin D can also help rebuild enamel and improve the long-term health of your teeth.
Eat apples to promote the production of saliva. Believe it or not, saliva actually helps fight against the development of cavities. Keep in mind that apples won’t necessarily reverse the growth of cavities, but they can prevent their occurrences in the first place.

Milk isn’t the only option when it comes to filling up your body with vitamin D. The vitamin content in mushrooms not only helps rebuild enamel in your teeth, but it can also improve your absorption of calcium – effectively improving the benefits of calcium-filled foods.
Water keeps your gums in a state of hydration and deposits certain minerals into your teeth that they need to remain strong. While improving the strength of your teeth, water also reduces the risk of their decomposition. To get an idea of how much water you should be drinking each day, aim for half your body weight in ounces (possibly more if you exercise regularly). Just make sure you’re staying away from the fluoridated stuff – there is a difference.
There are a number of teas out there that are packed full of catechins and polyphenols that fight against the development cavities and erode the bacteria responsible for plaque build-up. While some teas do help, that doesn’t mean that all do! Try to avoid ones that are packed full of sugar, because they could just nullify the benefits and cause even more damage in the process.
Oranges are somewhat acidic in nature, which can work beneficially by acting as a brush and floss for your teeth. The vitamin and calcium content in this magic citrus fruit push to wear away harmful microbes and reduce your rate of tooth decay.
In general, nuts are known as superfoods because they’re packed with all sorts of fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals that contribute to the maintenance of our overall health. Well, those same benefits apply to your teeth as well! In particular, almonds, cashews, and peanuts are solid options when it comes to upping your vitamin and mineral content for those pearly whites.
So, what do you eat to fight tooth decay? These superfoods get the job done when it comes to improving the overall state of your oral health. By bringing them into your day, you can up your ability to keep that smile for a good, long time.
